Paris is divided into 20 neighbourhoods or arrondissements. If you know the postal code of any address in Paris, you can easily identify which arrondissement the address can be found. All postal codes in Paris begin with the prefix 75 followed by the number of the arrondissement i.e. 18th arrondissement would be written 75018. The suburbs are called banlieu and are generally more peaceful than the city addresses. Some of the more desirable suburbs are found on the West of Paris and include St Cloud, Boulogne and Neuilly. Each neighbourhood is very different in style, architecture and taste and it is therefore very difficult to generalise any given arrondissement, but the following guide may give you an insight into each arrondissement.

Arrondissement One
Known as the geographical centre of Paris and a haven for tourists. You can find the Louvre, Les Halles and the Palais Royale here.

Arrondissement Two
Known as the business district, or Bourse in French, the Paris Stock Market and the Biblioteque Nationale are here. You can also find the Passage des Panaromas; known as the place to shop in the 19 century, it was the first place to have electricity and is well worth a visit. You can find coffee shops tucked away and are almost certain to pick up presents which are a little more unusual.

Arrondissement Three and Four
Both the Third and the Fourth make up the Marais district, one of the oldest parts of France. Unique and still house some of the most spectacular 17 century homes which once were owned by the most noblest of families living in France. It is also home to the museum Carnavalet depicting wonderful gardens and a great history of Paris. The centre of the Marais is the liveliest place to be and offers an alternative lifestyle filled with trendy bars and cafes.
